Introduction

An Emergency Action Plan (EAP) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) manual are vital to the success of any athletic association or program. The purpose of an EAP/SOP is to have an established written document to help decrease the amount of confusion and conflict, which may arise as a result of a particular event. The ultimate benefits of an EAP/SOP are to provide the athletes with a safer playing environment, as well as the best possible care in the most efficient manner should an emergency situation occur. This blueprint describes what should be done in an emergency and how certain situations should be handled, such as how to help with an asthmatic athlete or what do in a lightning storm.

This document contains emergency information including contact numbers, emergency care procedures, directions to and from the field for various emergency care providers, and field diagrams. Each site also has a list of possible hazards and improvements which could be made to allow for a safer field. The SOP includes information on how to handle various medical conditions and weather situations. It also provides safety and health information concerning drug usage, protective equipment and head injuries. There are also several forms, including a participation waiver and emergency contact information form to reduce liability. Through this EAP/SOP, Middle Road Athletic Association has the opportunity to reduce risk and heighten safety, ultimately improving the overall athletic association.
